This is the point almost every agency website leaves out. After major surgery the body is more prone to blood clots. Sitting for hours on a plane encourages a deep vein thrombosis, which in the worst case leads to a pulmonary embolism. That is why the surgeon clears the flight home, not the travel plan. BAAPS has repeatedly warned about patients flying home too soon; ITV News reported on a woman who nearly died on the flight back from Turkey.
Why the flight in particular
Three things coincide: fresh surgery with increased clotting tendency, hours of sitting with bent legs, and dry cabin air. After abdominal surgery or liposuction the abdomen and pelvis are themselves affected. After a BBL normal sitting isn't possible anyway.
What to do on the plane
- Compression stockings if the surgeon recommends them, usually yes
- Aisle seat, get up and walk every one to two hours
- Drink plenty, no alcohol
- Circle your feet, tense your calves while seated
- Blood-thinning injections only if prescribed, never self-sourced
- After a BBL: the special pillow, or don't fly
Warning signs, even days later
Pain or swelling in one calf, sudden breathlessness, chest pain, a racing heart. Call 999 (UK) or 112 (Ireland) immediately, even if you're already home. Not cause for panic, but cause for vigilance.
How soon after a tummy tuck can I fly?
The surgeon decides at the last check-up. Usually it is after about a week.
Are compression stockings compulsory?
Not legally, but medically sensible. Ask your surgeon, they'll almost always recommend them.
Let’s talk it through, without pressure
Twenty minutes, no obligation. We start by working out whether surgery is the right step for you at all, and whether now is the right time.
