Rhinoplasty in Turkey, the process, the healing, and what I wish I’d known
Rhinoplasty is the procedure Turkey is best known for internationally, and the one where patience counts most: the tip takes up to twelve months for swelling to resolve completely. Anyone who judges at four weeks judges too early.
My connection to this surgeon
I was a patient of the specialist I refer you to. I was so convinced by his work that I chose to work with him. On site, his clinic team looks after you, English-speaking, from the airport to the last check-up. He speaks English himself; your consent conversation happens without an interpreter. What a rhinoplasty is
Bone and cartilage are reshaped, hump removed, tip refined, bridge straightened, septum corrected if needed (septorhinoplasty). Closed technique without an external scar, or open technique with a small incision across the columella. Newer “preservation rhinoplasty” keeps more of your own structure.
The nose is a breathing organ. A good operation improves or preserves breathing; a bad one worsens it. That belongs in the consent conversation.
Who it suits, and who it doesn’t
Suitable once growth is complete, for a hump, deviation, wide or drooping tip, breathing problems from the septum, and expectations that fit your own face.
Not: if you want another person's nose, with unrealistic ideas of perfection, with nicotine, with certain psychological difficulties around appearance, a reputable surgeon will raise this.
The techniques in detail
Closed technique
All incisions inside the nose, no external scar. For humps and smaller corrections. Less swelling, but limited view for the surgeon.
Open technique
Plus a small incision across the columella; the nasal skin is lifted. Full view, ideal for tip work, asymmetries and revisions. The small scar usually heals inconspicuously; the tip swells longer.
Preservation rhinoplasty
Keeps the nasal bridge and ligaments largely intact instead of removing and rebuilding. Less trauma, faster healing, more natural result, but not for every nose and heavily dependent on the surgeon’s experience. Widespread in Turkey.
Ultrasonic (piezo)
Bone is shaped with ultrasound instead of a chisel. More precise, less bruising. A tool, not a method, what matters is who holds it.
Septorhinoplasty
If the septum is deviated and obstructs breathing, it’s corrected at the same time. With a functional indication, part of the cost may be fundable at home, check.
Tip rhinoplasty alone
Only the tip, no bone work. Smaller operation, but the tip is the part that takes longest.
What rhinoplasty can’t do
It can’t give you someone else’s nose. It has to fit your face shape, skin thickness and ethnicity. With thick skin, fine tip contours are hard to achieve. A good surgeon tells you what’s achievable on your nose and what isn’t, and shows it in a simulation described as guidance, not a promise.
Revision
Five to fifteen per cent of rhinoplasties are revised, for asymmetry, irregularities or breathing problems. Revision is harder than the first operation because scar tissue and missing cartilage come into play; cartilage from the ear or rib is often needed. So: the first operation with the right surgeon, and no thought of revision before twelve months.
The right time
- Growth complete, usually from 17 or 18.
- No cold or sinus infection at the time of surgery.
- Smoke-free, no blood thinners including herbal ones.
- Six weeks without glasses on the nose and without contact sports arranged.
The process in Turkey
Before you travel
Blood tests, no blood thinners, stop smoking. Saline spray and cold packs.
Arrival
The day before surgery.
Surgery day
Consent with photos and simulation, anaesthetic, one and a half to three hours. External splint, possibly internal packing or silicone splints.
Days 1-7
Swelling and bruising around the eyes. Head elevated, cooling. Packing removed early, splint on day seven.
Clearance and flight home
After splint removal and once the surgeon clears you, usually after about a week.
Healing week by week
The part clinic websites cover in one sentence, and the most important.
Splint, swelling, black eyes, blocked nose. Mouth breathing.
Splint off. The nose looks swollen and too big, that's normal. Desk work possible.
Bruising gone, swelling receding. No glasses on the bridge, no contact sports.
About seventy per cent of swelling gone. The tip is still firm.
The shape is clearly visible.
Final result. Only now consider a revision.
What nobody likes to say
- At two weeks you won't like your nose. Almost nobody does.
- The tip stays firm and numb for months.
- No glasses on the nose for six weeks, a real everyday problem.
- A proportion of rhinoplasties are revised. Studies quote five to fifteen per cent.
- Revising a revision is far harder than the first operation.
Risks
General surgical risks: bleeding, infection, delayed wound healing, blood clots (DVT and pulmonary embolism), anaesthetic complications. Procedure-specific: breathing impairment, asymmetry, irregularities of the bridge or tip, tip droop, septal perforation, prolonged swelling, altered sensation, revision surgery.
Two risks are particular to going abroad: combining several procedures under one long anaesthetic, and the flight home. Both belong in the surgeon’s consultation, not the quote. In full: Cosmetic surgery abroad.
Aftercare at home
In addition to general aftercare: follow-up after rhinoplasty is mainly visual, photos in the same light and at the same distance help the surgeon remotely. Breathing problems after weeks: see an ENT specialist at home. Revisions no earlier than twelve months.

What a quote should contain
I give no prices here. Not because I don’t know them, but because any figure without an examination is misleading, and because this site also serves countries where price advertising for cosmetic surgery is restricted. A reputable quote for a rhinoplasty is itemised by surgeon, anaesthetic, hospital stay, materials and aftercare, and it states what isn’t included. When two quotes differ widely, it’s almost always the surgeon’s experience, the materials, the hospital or the length of stay. I’ll walk you through the clinic’s actual quote line by line.
Common questions
How long until I see the result?
Roughly at three months, finally at twelve. The tip is slowest.
Open or closed?
The surgeon decides on findings. Open gives more access for complex work, with a small columellar scar.
What is preservation rhinoplasty?
A technique that keeps your own nasal structure largely intact. Less trauma, more natural result, not for every nose.
Could I breathe worse afterwards?
Not with good technique. Discuss your breathing beforehand so the septum is assessed.
How long in Turkey?
Usually one week. The surgeon clears the flight home.
What’s the chance of a revision?
Studies quote five to fifteen per cent. That belongs on the table before you decide.
How long no glasses?
About six weeks not on the bridge. Contact lenses straight away.
How long am I off work?
Desk work after one to two weeks if you can live with residual swelling. Exercise after four to six weeks.
Is the simulation a promise?
No. It’s guidance. A reputable surgeon says so explicitly.
What does rhinoplasty cost in Turkey?
It depends on extent, technique and surgeon. I give no figures.
Is septum correction fundable at home?
With documented obstruction the functional part may be. Check first.
How painful is it?
Not very. What’s unpleasant is swelling, the blocked nose and the splint, not pain.
