Ear Surgery in Turkey, the process, the healing, and what I wish I’d known

By Ivy11 min readUpdated September 2026

Ear surgery is the procedure adults are often ashamed of for decades, and which then takes ninety minutes. Honestly: for this alone a trip to Turkey rarely makes sense. Combined with another facial procedure it's a different matter.

My connection to this surgeon

I was a patient of the specialist I refer you to. I was so convinced by his work that I chose to work with him. On site, his clinic team looks after you, English-speaking, from the airport to the last check-up. He speaks English himself; your consent conversation happens without an interpreter. For legal reasons I don't publish his name. You learn it later in the process, once you have signed a short agreement with me and your photos are in for his assessment.

What ear surgery is

Through an incision behind the ear the cartilage is weakened, reshaped and held in position with permanent sutures (antihelixplasty). If the conchal bowl is too deep, cartilage is removed as well. The scar sits in the crease behind the ear and is practically invisible once healed.

In adults it is usually possible under local anaesthetic with sedation.

Who it suits, and who it doesn’t

Suitable from school age once ear growth is complete, and at any adult age. Also for a single prominent ear.

Not: with active infection around the ear; with a tendency to keloid scarring without discussion, the risk behind the ear is raised; with nicotine.

The techniques in detail

Antihelixplasty

The commonest method: the cartilage is weakened and held in the desired shape with permanent sutures, recreating the missing fold.

Conchal reduction

With a deep conchal bowl, cartilage is removed so the ear sits closer to the head. Often combined with antihelixplasty.

Suture-only, no-incision methods

Widely advertised, but often not durable, and sutures can cut through. For markedly prominent ears they're no alternative. Ask the surgeon why he chooses one method over the other.

Honest about the trip

For ear surgery alone the effort of travelling to Turkey rarely justifies itself: a small operation, a big journey, and aftercare is simpler at home. Combined with rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery or a facelift it's different. I'll tell you that in conversation, even if it costs me a referral.

The right time

The process in Turkey

Before you travel

Blood tests, no blood thinners. Wash your hair; afterwards it's restricted for two weeks.

Arrival

The day before surgery.

Surgery day

Consent, local anaesthetic with sedation or general, one to two hours. Head dressing.

Days 1-5

Dressing changed, then a headband. No sleeping on the ear. Check-up.

Clearance and flight home

Usually after about a week, and only once the surgeon clears you.

Healing week by week

The part clinic websites cover in one sentence, and the most important.

Week 1

Dressing, then headband. Tightness, numbness, tenderness. No sleeping on your side.

Week 2

Stitches out. Headband day and night. First shape visible.

Weeks 3-6

Headband at night. Swelling recedes; the ears still feel foreign.

Month 3

Final result. Scar behind the ear pale.

What nobody likes to say

  • The ears are tender and numb for weeks, you'll barely feel cold.
  • The headband at night for four weeks is tedious, but it decides the result.
  • Slight relapse is possible, which is why surgeons usually slightly over-correct.
  • The two ears will never be exactly identical.
  • Behind the ear, keloid scars can form if you're prone to them.

Risks

General surgical risks: bleeding, infection, delayed wound healing, blood clots (DVT and pulmonary embolism), anaesthetic complications. Procedure-specific: bleeding into the cartilage, cartilage infection (rare but serious), relapse, visible or palpable sutures, keloid scarring behind the ear, asymmetry, permanent sensory change, revision.

Two risks are particular to going abroad: combining several procedures under one long anaesthetic, and the flight home. Both belong in the surgeon’s consultation, not the quote. In full: Cosmetic surgery abroad.

Aftercare at home

In addition to general aftercare: the headband is the aftercare, day and night for two weeks, then at night for four more. No pulling on the ear and no contact sport for six weeks. Sudden pain, redness or swelling after the first week needs reporting immediately: cartilage infection must be treated fast.

What that looks like for women from the UK and Ireland is on the country pages.

What a quote should contain

I give no prices here. Not because I don’t know them, but because any figure without an examination is misleading, and because this site also serves countries where price advertising for cosmetic surgery is restricted. A reputable quote for ear surgery is itemised by surgeon, anaesthetic, hospital stay, materials and aftercare, and it states what isn’t included. When two quotes differ widely, it’s almost always the surgeon’s experience, the materials, the hospital or the length of stay. I’ll walk you through the clinic’s actual quote line by line.

Common questions

Will the scar show?

It sits in the crease behind the ear and is practically invisible once healed.

How long do I wear the headband?

Two weeks day and night, then about four weeks at night.

Can the ears go back?

Slight relapse is possible, which is why surgeons over-correct slightly.

From what age?

From school age once the ear has grown, and only at the child's wish. Adults at any time.

How long in Turkey?

Usually one week. The surgeon clears the flight home.

How long am I off work?

About a week, then workable with the headband.

Local or general anaesthetic?

In adults usually local with sedation; in children general.

Is the trip worth it for this alone?

Honestly: often not. Combined with another facial procedure, more so.

What does ear surgery cost in Turkey?

It depends on technique and extent. I give no figures.

Will my ears be numb?

Tender and partly numb for weeks. Sensation usually returns.

Let’s talk it through, without pressure

Twenty minutes, no obligation. We start by working out whether surgery is the right step for you at all, and whether now is the right time.
