Liposuction in Turkey, the process, the healing, and what I wish I’d known
Liposuction is the most misunderstood procedure: it's contouring, not weight loss. If you fly to Turkey to “lose weight” you'll come back disappointed, and that's not the surgeon's fault.
My connection to this surgeon
I was a patient of the specialist I refer you to. I was so convinced by his work that I chose to work with him. On site, his clinic team looks after you, English-speaking, from the airport to the last check-up. He speaks English himself; your consent conversation happens without an interpreter. For legal reasons I don't publish his name. You learn it later in the process, once you have signed a short agreement with me and your photos are in for his assessment.
What liposuction is
Fat cells are suctioned through small incisions with cannulas, abdomen, flanks, hips, thighs, arms, chin. Techniques such as tumescent, VASER (ultrasound) or laser differ in detail; what matters is the surgeon's experience, not the device name.
There is a medical upper limit to how much can safely be removed in one session. Offers with “unlimited areas” are a warning sign.
Who it suits, and who it doesn’t
Suitable for stubborn fat deposits despite stable, normal weight, good skin elasticity and realistic expectations.
Not: as a weight-loss method, with significant obesity, with loose skin (a lift may be better), with clotting disorders, with nicotine.
The techniques in detail
Tumescent liposuction
The standard: fluid with local anaesthetic and a vasoconstrictor is infiltrated, fat is suctioned with fine cannulas. Less bleeding, less pain. All other techniques build on it.
VASER (ultrasound)
Ultrasound loosens the fat before suction. Advantages: gentler on connective tissue, often less bruising, good for finer contouring. Downside: more involved, and the device name says nothing about the surgeon. “VASER” is not a quality guarantee.
Laser liposuction
Laser liquefies fat and is meant to tighten skin. The tightening effect is limited; with loose skin no liposuction replaces a lift.
Water-assisted (WAL)
A water jet loosens the fat. Gentle, often used for fat transfer because the cells stay intact.
Power-assisted (PAL)
A vibrating cannula that eases the surgeon’s work. For larger volumes and fibrous tissue.
Areas and limits
Abdomen, flanks, hips, inner and outer thighs, knees, upper arms, back, chin, almost anything is possible. What isn’t: everything at once. The safe volume per session is limited; above it, circulatory strain and complication risk rise steeply. Offers with “unlimited areas” are a warning sign, not a bonus.
High-definition and 360
“Lipo 360” means suction all round the trunk; “HD lipo” means accentuating muscle contours. Both are marketing terms for more extensive liposuction. The effect depends entirely on the surgeon and your skin elasticity; with loose skin the result gets worse, not better.
The right time
- Normal weight or close, stable for months.
- Good skin elasticity, often lacking after major weight loss or pregnancies; then a lift rather than liposuction.
- Smoke-free, no clotting disorder.
- Four to six weeks of compression garments arranged.
The process in Turkey
Before you travel
Blood tests, medication list, stop smoking. Compression garments in the size the clinic specifies.
Arrival
The day before surgery.
Surgery day
Markings standing up, consent, anaesthetic, one to three hours. Compression straight after.
Days 1-5
Fluid leaking from the incisions in the first days is normal. Check-up, compression round the clock.
Clearance and flight home
Usually after about a week, and only once the surgeon clears you.
Healing week by week
The part clinic websites cover in one sentence, and the most important.
Bruising, swelling, feels like a deep muscle ache. Compression round the clock. Short walks.
Desk work possible. Bruises change colour.
Swelling persists. Compression continues. Skin can feel numb or firm.
Exercise once cleared. Compression stops.
Contours appear. Unevenness at this stage is usually still swelling.
Final result.
What nobody likes to say
- The scales barely move.
- Four to six weeks of compression is uncomfortable, and non-negotiable.
- Unevenness and dents are the commonest complaint and depend heavily on the surgeon.
- If you gain weight afterwards, your body stores fat elsewhere.
- With loose skin the result can look worse than before.
Risks
General surgical risks: bleeding, infection, delayed wound healing, blood clots (DVT and pulmonary embolism), anaesthetic complications. Procedure-specific: contour irregularities and dents, seromas, permanent discolouration, numbness, asymmetry, with excessive volumes circulatory and fluid problems, very rarely fat embolism or injury to internal organs.
Two risks are particular to going abroad: combining several procedures under one long anaesthetic, and the flight home. Both belong in the surgeon’s consultation, not the quote. In full: Cosmetic surgery abroad.
Aftercare at home
Before you travel we sort out: who removes the stitches; which practice near you is willing to see you if something isn't right; which documents you bring home, operation report, material details, medication list; who you can reach at night. And we talk about what the NHS or HSE will and won't do after an elective procedure abroad: emergency care yes, corrections no.
What that looks like for women from the UK and Ireland is on the country pages.
What a quote should contain
I give no prices here. Not because I don’t know them, but because any figure without an examination is misleading, and because this site also serves countries where price advertising for cosmetic surgery is restricted. A reputable quote for liposuction is itemised by surgeon, anaesthetic, hospital stay, materials and aftercare, and it states what isn’t included. When two quotes differ widely, it’s almost always the surgeon’s experience, the materials, the hospital or the length of stay. I’ll walk you through the clinic’s actual quote line by line.
Common questions
Will I lose weight?
Hardly. Usually one to three kilos of fat. It’s about shape, not weight.
How many areas in one session?
The safe volume limits that, not your wish list.
Does the fat come back?
The removed cells don’t. With weight gain the remaining cells grow, elsewhere too.
VASER or conventional?
VASER can be gentler but isn’t a quality mark. The surgeon matters.
What is lipo 360?
Suction all round the trunk. A marketing term for extensive liposuction, not a separate procedure.
How long do I wear compression?
Four to six weeks, round the clock for the first two.
How long in Turkey?
Usually one week. The surgeon clears the flight home.
How long am I off work?
Desk work after about a week, exercise after four to six weeks.
Will I have dents?
Contour irregularities are the commonest complication and depend heavily on the surgeon. In the first three months unevenness is usually still swelling.
Does liposuction help cellulite?
No. It can even make it worse.
What does liposuction cost in Turkey?
It depends on areas, technique and surgeon. I give no figures.
When will I see the result?
Contours at about three months, final result at six.
Let’s talk it through, without pressure
Twenty minutes, no obligation. We start by working out whether surgery is the right step for you at all, and whether now is the right time.
