Tummy Tuck in Turkey, the process, the healing, and what I wish I’d known
The tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is the procedure with the biggest gap between advertising and reality: clinic websites say “flat stomach”; reality says up to four weeks of walking bent over and a scar from hip to hip. Both are true.
My connection to this surgeon
I was a patient of the specialist I refer you to. I was so convinced by his work that I chose to work with him. On site, his clinic team looks after you, English-speaking, from the airport to the last check-up. He speaks English himself; your consent conversation happens without an interpreter. For legal reasons I don't publish his name. You learn it later in the process, once you have signed a short agreement with me and your photos are in for his assessment.
What a tummy tuck is
Excess skin and fat of the lower abdomen are removed, the separated rectus muscles are stitched together in the midline, and the belly button is repositioned. With less excess skin a mini tummy tuck with a shorter scar and no navel repositioning may be an option.
A tummy tuck is not a weight-loss method. It treats skin and muscle, not weight.
Who it suits, and who it doesn’t
Suitable for loose abdominal skin after pregnancies or major weight loss, diastasis recti, stable weight for at least six months and no further pregnancies planned.
Not: if pregnancy is planned, during ongoing weight loss, with nicotine, with certain scars from previous abdominal surgery, with clotting disorders. With obesity the surgeon may advise losing weight first.
The variants in detail
Full abdominoplasty
The standard after pregnancies or major weight loss: hip-to-hip incision just above the pubic hairline, removal of skin between navel and incision, repair of the diastasis along its whole length, repositioning of the navel. Only this variant treats skin and muscle above the navel.
Mini tummy tuck
Shorter incision, no navel repositioning, only skin below the navel. Sounds attractive, but suits only minor excess below the navel with no significant diastasis. After pregnancies that applies to few women. Choose a mini when a full one is needed and you get half a result with a full scar.
Extended abdominoplasty
After massive weight loss, when skin excess reaches the flanks and back. Longer incision, longer surgery, longer recovery. Sometimes a full body lift.
Fleur-de-lis
An additional vertical midline incision when a lot of skin must go horizontally too. Far more visible scar; only sensible after very large weight loss.
With liposuction
Flanks and upper abdomen are almost always suctioned in the same session to shape the waist. It lengthens the operation and increases swelling, but is often the difference between a flat and a well-shaped abdomen. The surgeon decides how much is safe.
Diastasis recti: what exercise can and can’t do
Separated rectus muscles are normal after pregnancy. Targeted exercise can narrow the gap and ease symptoms, but a gap over roughly two centimetres won’t close fully with exercise. Whether yours should be repaired surgically is decided on examination, not by feel and not by an Instagram programme. Without muscle repair the abdomen often stays rounded after skin removal.
The right time
- At least six to twelve months after your last birth and after breastfeeding.
- Weight stable for at least six months, if you’re still losing, you’re giving away result.
- Family complete. A later pregnancy is possible but can undo much of the result.
- Smoke-free for at least four to six weeks before and after, for this procedure that’s a condition, not a suggestion.
- Two weeks with no lifting, carrying or bending arranged, with help at home.
To combine or not
A tummy tuck is often combined with breast surgery (mummy makeover) or thigh lift. Every combination lengthens the anaesthetic and raises clot risk. Some surgeons always operate in two sessions; others combine in healthy women of normal weight. Both can be defensible, the decision belongs in the surgeon’s consultation, not in a discounted package.
The process in Turkey
Before you travel
Blood tests, ECG, medication list. Stop smoking several weeks before. Buy compression garments in the size the clinic specifies. Arrange a companion and help at home.
Arrival
The day before surgery. Airport pick-up, hotel, nothing to eat or drink after 10 pm.
Surgery day
Pre-op checks, markings, the consent conversation with the surgeon. General anaesthetic. First night monitored.
The days after
Getting up with help, first steps, discharge to the hotel with instructions and an emergency number. Dressing changes and check-ups.
Clearance and flight home
Only once the surgeon clears you. Compression stockings, aisle seat, walk every two hours.
Healing week by week
The part clinic websites cover in one sentence, and the most important.
Pain and tightness, bent posture, sleeping with knees up. Drains usually until day three to five. Help needed.
More upright, stitches checked. Numbness between navel and scar is normal and can last months.
Low mood and impatience. The abdomen is swollen and hard. Desk work possible towards the end.
Driving, longer walks. Scar red and raised.
Exercise once cleared. Compression stops.
Swelling recedes, contours appear.
Scar pale. Final result.
What nobody likes to say
- The scar runs just above the pubic hairline from hip bone to hip bone. It fades, but it stays.
- Up to four weeks of walking bent over is harder than it sounds, for your back and your mood.
- The belly button looks foreign for weeks.
- Swelling above the scar can persist for months.
- With nicotine the risk of wound breakdown is much higher, honest surgeons won't operate on smokers.
Risks
General surgical risks: bleeding, infection, delayed wound healing, blood clots (DVT and pulmonary embolism), anaesthetic complications. Procedure-specific: seromas, wound breakdown especially in the middle of the scar, tissue necrosis in smokers, permanent numbness, asymmetry, skin excess at the scar ends (“dog ears”), prominent scars, revision surgery.
Two risks are particular to going abroad: combining several procedures under one long anaesthetic, and the flight home. Both belong in the surgeon’s consultation, not the quote. In full: Cosmetic surgery abroad.
Aftercare at home
Before you travel we sort out: who removes the stitches; which practice near you is willing to see you if something isn't right; which documents you bring home, operation report, material details, medication list; who you can reach at night. And we talk about what the NHS or HSE will and won't do after an elective procedure abroad: emergency care yes, corrections no.
What that looks like for women from the UK and Ireland is on the country pages.
What a quote should contain
I give no prices here. Not because I don’t know them, but because any figure without an examination is misleading, and because this site also serves countries where price advertising for cosmetic surgery is restricted. A reputable quote for a tummy tuck is itemised by surgeon, anaesthetic, hospital stay, materials and aftercare, and it states what isn’t included. When two quotes differ widely, it’s almost always the surgeon’s experience, the materials, the hospital or the length of stay. I’ll walk you through the clinic’s actual quote line by line.
Common questions
How long am I off work?
Desk work after two to three weeks, physical work after six to eight. Lifting children not before four to six weeks.
How long do I stay in Turkey?
Usually one week. The surgeon clears the flight home.
Does the scar disappear?
No. It fades and flattens over twelve months and sits in the bikini line, but it stays.
How soon after giving birth?
At least six to twelve months after, and after breastfeeding, with stable weight.
Can I still get pregnant?
Medically yes, but the result may be lost. Best after your family is complete.
Is a mini tummy tuck better?
Smaller, not better. It only suits minor excess below the navel.
Will diastasis close with exercise?
Small gaps can improve. A larger gap won’t close fully, then only surgical repair helps.
How long do I wear compression?
Usually six weeks, round the clock in the first weeks.
When can I exercise?
Walking from week one, exercise once cleared from week six, abdominal training later.
What does a tummy tuck cost in Turkey?
It depends on extent, surgeon, hospital and stay. I give no figures; the clinic quotes. I’ll explain beforehand what must be in it.
When will I see the result?
The shape at about three months, the final result with a faded scar at six to twelve.
How painful is it?
Noticeably for the first three to five days, especially getting up and coughing. Then tightness rather than pain. The muscle repair is the sorest part.
Let’s talk it through, without pressure
Twenty minutes, no obligation. We start by working out whether surgery is the right step for you at all, and whether now is the right time.
